Rosie Gordon-Wallace is Founder, Curator, and Director of Diaspora Vibe Gallery and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator. Since 1996, Gordon-Wallace has initiated and produced transnational creative programs that redefine concepts of “diaspora.”

As the United States begins its dialogue to reestablish diplomatic relations with Cuba and Time magazine features Cuba on their front cover page, we question how this political shift will impact Caribbean and ultimately Latin American art and artists. For the past twenty years, we have seen the rise of international biennials and art fairs moving art and artists throughout the world and creating a global market for art. The Caribbean and Latin America have not stayed behind: the Sao Palo Biennial in Brazil and the Havana Biennial, which is taking place this summer, have both become well-known international destinations for art collectors. Other Latin American countries have followed suit these past few years: the first Nicaragua Biennial, the Central American Biennial, and The International Biennial of Contemporary Art Foundation of Cartagena de Indias. There are fairs in Buenos Aires, ArteBA; Zona Maco, México Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City; ARTBO, the International Art Fair of Bogotá; and Ch.Aco: Chile’s Contemporary Art Fair. All of these fairs and biennials position themselves as quintessential meeting points for the art market in the Caribbean or Latin America.
